The History
Naturepedic was founded by Barry A Cik, a quarter century veteran in the field of environmental engineering. In anticipation of his first grandchild, Barry went searching for a suitable baby crib mattress. Sadly, he found all of the crib mattress offerings completely unacceptable and was in shock at the state of the industry. "I knew all about vinyl/PVC, polyurethane foam, and the various chemicals contained in them and there was no way I was going to put my grandchild to sleep within a few inches of these chemicals."

Barry then set out to find a suitable organic baby crib mattress. "All of the organic baby crib mattresses on the market contained either latex, wool, or both, and were not waterproof... if the mattress were to get wet, it would grow mold and fungus without any effective way to clean it. The wool/latex issue left a lot to be desired considering their known allergenic properties." According to Barry, "the organic baby mattresses were nothing more than miniaturized adult mattresses, which made little sense for babies."

Barry, together with his two sons, set out to found Naturepedic, an organic and non-toxic baby crib mattress company dedicated to providing parents with a better alternative - the first and only waterproof organic baby crib mattress designed with a safe food grade polyethylene cover, and which eliminates the potentially harmful chemicals with which Barry was so familiar.

My Naturepedic Experience!
I have learned through my research that cotton is one of the most pesticide applied crops. Think of all the things that are made from cotton! Scary huh? When we start talking about mattresses not only are they made with cotton, but also usually several different types of plastics and PVCs that are very harmful as well. When you consider the fact that babies and toddlers sleep at least 10 to 14 hours on their mattress and breath the gasses these emit you have to stop and think about the effect it has on their little bodies. Did you know they have have now linked pesticides to ADHD??

When I was pregnant with Ethan I purchased one of the cheapest mattresses you could find. Seriously I was not thinking about the harmful gasses at the time of purchase. However, after recently reading Jillian Michael's "How to Master Your Metabolism" I realized the seriousness of the effect plastics and non-organic items do to our bodies let alone our childrens bodies! If you have any doubt of the effects these items have in our health you must read this book. She gives numerous studies and stats to back up what she says.

After educating myself about PVC's I was ecstatic when Naturepedic let me review their No-Compromise Organic Cotton Ultra Baby Crib & Toddler Mattress. When I received the mattress the first thing I noticed was the weight of the mattress. The cheap mattress I purchased a couple years ago I could practically balance it on one hand it is so light. There is just not much to it! The Naturepedic mattress was much heavier because this is a REAL mattress.

I put the mattress into the crib and I saw that it fit more tightly into the crib than my previous mattress which is another plus. The Naturepedic mattress is much more firmer when I press it with my hand. I can tell a huge difference doing this with the cheap mattress compared to the Naturepedic mattress. The best way I know how to describe it is the difference between driving a VW Bug and a Rolls Royce. The waterproof organic cotton cover is soft, much better than feeling the plastic cover on the old mattress. Overall the construction of the Naturepedic mattress is amazing top quality.

I laid Ethan down for his first nap on the Naturepedic mattress. He snuggled down fast and I actually think he is sleeping a little better! I feel so much better knowing he is sleeping on a mattress that is not emitting harmful gasses. This mattress will also fit his toddler bed when we transition him to one later this year. Later down the road when it is time for a larger bed we will be looking forward to getting another Naturepedic mattress for Ethan.

Make an Organic Mattress a Priority for your baby! 
Obviously the mattress and bedding are the most important "baby gear" items you will need to purchase for your baby. Yes, buying organic ones will cost more, but you can't deny the facts of why it is so important right? Here are some tips for making the mattress and bedding a priority in your purchases and to your friends & family who will be buying gifts for your new little one:

• Do without all the unnecessary baby gear.  There is too much baby gear & gadgets available and it does not mean you need one of everything. There were several items I did without so I had the extra money to buy a jogging stroller which was my priority when purchasing my baby gear. I did fine without all of the bouncers, walkers, etc and I was happy that I spent my money on one big purchase that was more important to me.
• Talk to your family. Usually your parents or other close family members will buy you one large item for a gift. If you don't have this luxury, let your family know that you are wanting to purchase an organic mattress/or and bedding for your baby and would be so happy if they would just give you cash to go towards your purchases. I do not think it is rude to ask this of your family.
• Make a note on your baby registry. Baby registries usually have an extra box that you can add notes to those who print out your registry. This is a great place to add that you prefer only organic bedding and clothing. Also be sure to register for some of these items that you would like as many stores now carry a variety of organic items.
